Vintage fountain pens from 1980 or earlier › Vintage Montblanc 254 Fountain Pen & 273 Mechanical Pencil set in Etui

Vintage Montblanc 254 Fountain Pen & 273 Mechanical Pencil set in Etui

£259.99

This set is a great way to get into vintage Montblanc writing instruments!

The set comprises:

  1. Montblanc 254 fountain pen

  2. Montblanc 273 mechanical pencil

  3. Unbranded brown leather etui

TheMontblanc No. 254 is a vintage German-made piston-filler fountain pen produced during the mid-to-late 1950s (roughly 1954–1959). It was designed as a mid-tier, more affordable alternative to the flagship Meisterstück line while maintaining high-quality materials.

Key Features

  • Unique "Wing" Nib: The most distinctive feature is its 14ct gold wing-shaped nib. Unlike traditional nibs, it has broad "shoulders" that wrap slightly around the ebonite feed. The nib width is fine (engraved on piston knob). It writes smooth line. The nib has some “bounce” to it, but is not flexible.

  • Numbering System: The model number "254" is engraved on the piston knob, and indicates specific traits:

    • 2: Represents the mid-range series (200 series).

    • 5: Signifies it is a fountain pen.

    • 4: Refers to the No. 4 nib size, which is medium-sized.

  • Piston Filling System: This pen uses a built-in piston mechanism rather than cartridges or converters. The piston turning knob at the end of the barrel has the model number "254" and the nib size (F) engraved on it. The piston works and the ink window is clear.

  • Cap Design: It features a slip-on (friction fit) cap rather than a screw-on type. The cap finial is a rounded "snow-cap" logo (off-white due to age) and the cap is imprinted with the Montblanc name and logo. This suggests it is an early variant, made in 1954-1955. Later models have Montblanc engraved on the main cap band.

The Montblanc 273 ( marked as Montblanc Pix 273) is a vintage mechanical pencil produced in Germany, predominantly during the 1950s and 1960s. It is known as a shorter, high-quality "Pix" push-mechanism pencil, and matches the 254 fountain pen. Made from the 1940’s through to 1970, this pencil has the montblanc star atop the button for operating the push mechanism repeater pencil. This pencil has some lead and works.

Given the age of these pens, it is no surprise that both show signs of use. There are some scratches present particularly on the cap of the fountain pen and the gold coloured tip of the pencil. One of the scratches on the cap of the fountain pen maybe a hairline crack, but it is very difficult to tell. I am happy to provide more detailed photos on request if required. Overall these pens are in reasonable vintage, working, condition.

The etui has definitely lived a life and is very worn but is a nice, probably period correct, carrying case for these 2 pens. It zips up correctly and doesn’t have any holes in the leather.
